WeRide ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application WeRide ("the App"). Please read this policy carefully.
1. Information we collect
1.1 Information you provide
- Account information: Name, email address, profile photo (via Google Sign-In)
- Profile information: Nickname, phone number, address (optional)
- Vehicle information: Vehicle make, model, year, registration, fuel type (optional)
- Emergency contacts: Names and phone numbers of your designated emergency contacts
- Content: Messages, photos, voice messages, and other content you share within groups
- Feedback: Bug reports, feature requests, and screenshots you submit
1.2 Information collected automatically
- Location data: Real-time GPS location when you are in an active group ride. Location sharing can be paused at any time.
- Device information: Device model, operating system version, app version, unique device identifiers
- Usage data: Features used, screens visited, ride statistics (distance, duration, speed), session duration
- Sensor data: Accelerometer data for crash detection (only when crash detection is enabled by you)
- Battery level: Phone battery percentage (shared with group members during rides)
1.3 Information from third parties
- Google Sign-In: Name, email, and profile picture from your Google account
- Push notifications: Device push notification token from Expo/Firebase
2. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve the App's features and services
- Enable real-time location sharing and navigation within groups
- Process and display ride statistics and history
- Facilitate group communication (chat, voice messages, calls)
- Send emergency SOS alerts to your emergency contacts and group members
- Detect potential crashes and trigger emergency notifications
- Track and split group expenses
- Send push notifications about group activity, messages, and ride updates
- Analyze usage patterns to improve the App (analytics)
- Respond to bug reports and feature requests
- Ensure safety and security of the platform
3. How we share your information
We share your information in the following circumstances:
- With group members: Your name, profile photo, location, battery level, ride status, and messages are visible to other members of groups you join
- Emergency contacts: Your live location is shared with your designated emergency contacts when an SOS is triggered
- Service providers: We use third-party services including MongoDB Atlas (database), Cloudflare R2 (file storage), Railway (hosting), and Firebase (authentication and notifications)
- Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, or government request
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not share your data with advertisers.
4. Data storage and security
Your data is stored on secure servers using MongoDB Atlas with encryption at rest. Files and media are stored on Cloudflare R2 with encrypted connections. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including:
- Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/WSS)
- Server-side field-level encryption for sensitive data
- Local SQLite database with SQLCipher encryption on your device
- Session-based authentication with secure tokens
5. Data retention
We retain your data as follows:
- Account data: Retained until you delete your account
- Messages and content: Retained on our servers for the lifetime of the group. Disappearing messages are automatically deleted after the set duration.
- Ride history: Retained until you delete individual rides or your account
- Location data: Real-time location is not stored permanently. Location updates are kept only for the duration of an active session.
- Analytics data: Aggregated usage data is retained for product improvement
- Local data: Media and files from deleted groups are retained on your device unless you manually delete them
6. Your rights and choices
You have the right to:
- Pause location sharing: Use the pause button during rides to temporarily stop sharing your location
- Disable crash detection: Toggle crash detection on/off in your profile settings
- Delete your account: Contact us to request complete deletion of your account and associated data
- Access your data: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Manage notifications: Control push notification preferences in your device settings
- Leave groups: Leave any group at any time to stop sharing data with that group's members
7. Children's privacy
WeRide is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will promptly delete it. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
8. Third-party services
The App integrates with the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:
- Google Sign-In (Google Privacy Policy)
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google Privacy Policy)
- MongoDB Atlas (MongoDB Privacy Policy)
- Cloudflare R2 (Cloudflare Privacy Policy)
- OSRM / Photon (OpenStreetMap based, open source)
- Open-Meteo (weather data, no personal data shared)
- Overpass API (OpenStreetMap based, no personal data shared)
9. Permissions
The App requests the following device permissions:
- Location (foreground and background): Required for real-time group tracking and navigation
- Camera: Used for taking photos to share in group chat and bug reports
- Microphone: Used for voice messages and push-to-talk walkie-talkie feature
- Contacts: Used only if you choose to add emergency contacts from your phone
- Storage/Photos: Used for sharing images in chat and saving ride cards
- Sensors (Accelerometer): Used for crash detection when enabled
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy in the App and updating the "Last updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
